We lived in a simpler time once. A time when the world around us was disconnected, when faraway lands were the stuff of books and fairy tales. But that isn’t true anymore, the internet though not a new discovery still has a very transformative impact on the way we communicate, see, and connect with others and generally live lives.

It has changed us for the better, though that has been argued, realistically it has brought the world closer to us. We live in a time that is at the cusp of innovation and growth. Yet we still linger on old concepts and brick-and-mortar systems.

The age of innovation is now!

As with any innovation, be it the steam engine, the printing press, the computer or in this case the internet,  it has potential. The potential to evolve things past their current state and into a future state.

You see humans are an amazing species. We have the unique capacity to grow and evolve - not just physically or spiritually but intellectually as well and innovations like the internet push the envelope to how far human beings can evolve.

We now live in the age of innovation, a new borderless world that seeks exploration and changes the way we live our lives and do business as well.

Business is booming!

Commerce has been an integral part of our existence ever since we moved towards a civilized form of living. Our journey from band to the state has seen us either build businesses of our own or seek to empower the ones we are associated with. Our pursuit of profits has led to huge businesses being built. Ones that have had a societal impact on us. Be it Netflix which was once up for grabs by Blockbuster or Apple which just became the first Trillion dollar U.S. company.

The point here is that each one of these giants saw a gap in the way business was being done and capitalized on that instinct to lift the market from mediocrity and towards something better. The point here also is not to glorify these successes but to make businesses understand that to play in the big leagues, you have to ground right and set yourself up for the global stage. With the internet, the world is at your doorstep.

Enter the enablers!

I have had the unique pleasure of working with multiple businesses throughout my career. My pursuit of employment and innovation has led me to work with organizations in banking, telecom, software and in retail.

While working with a lot of these firms the one thing that always bothered me was how every one of them wanted to go it alone when it came to innovation. Call it fear or something else but the idea of collaborating with others - be it partners or vendors just freaked owners out.

The idea that innovation can be done in silos with no regard for the outside world or what it can offer is foolish. Working in the technology space I am very happy to report that this school of thought is slowly yet surely dying away.

Businesses nowadays realize that in this competitive world, you cant just go it alone. You need some level of collaboration or guidance to make sense of this digital world. I still remember one of my early clients, a retail concern who thought that the idea of an e-commerce store was a silly fad and would disappear.

Well, I am happy to report that their digital storefront is up and running with a best-in-breed system that is taking their brand much further than their conventional brick-and-mortar storefront could.

In a connected world, we are all global citizens who have access to a huge amount of information. Most of that information is in the form of brands and promotions. To remain relevant in this overloaded world you have to be relevant everywhere. Whether it is in your shop, on the internet, or across social media the message has to be omnichannel - that we serve you! Here and beyond.

Taking action today!

The first thing any business owner needs to do in their journey from good to great is to get their grounding right. Talk to the right consultants or the best technology providers to evaluate where their business needs strengthening. The right balance of a good product and a good go-to-market strategy can make the difference when it comes to establishing yourself as the next big thing. Remember life is a journey and not a destination, experimentation is key to success and in order to achieve the success you have to talk to others, collaborate and seek to become better versions of yourselves, business otherwise. Because in this new decentralized, interconnected, and intelligent world if you don’t do better, someone else will!
